By 2020, most people will access software applications online and access information through the use of cloud services hosted on remote server networks, according to a new Pew Internet & American life survey of 895 technology stakeholders and critics.

A solid majority of technology experts and stakeholders participating in the fourth Future of the Internet survey conducted by Pew Internet and Elon University’s Imagining the Internet Center agreed that the cloud will dominate, and desktop usage will diminish in the next 10 years.

The technology industry, an engine of innovation and U.S. prosperity for more than half a century, is accelerating its recovery from the recession with surging earnings that have spurred companies to sharply ramp up their hiring.

The latest evidence for the rebound came Thursday, when Internet giant Google Inc. posted a 37% profit jump for the first quarter and chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. reported a 34% revenue increase to record levels. The results follow the strong showing of bellwether Intel Corp., which Tuesday announced quarterly profit that nearly quadrupled on a 44% jump in sales.

Looking for a job? You’re probably about to find one. By the year 2018 there will be 1.4 million job openings for so-called “computer specialists” – that’s everyone from developers to database administrators – according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The non-hardware-related job market is expected to grow faster than almost any other sector in the country. For instance, jobs for systems and application software developers are expected to grow 30%-34%. The number of network systems and data communications jobs will explode by 53%.

More employers plan to increase college graduate hiring than decrease it for the first time in more than a year.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers‘ index for college hiring rose to 98.2, up from 87.2 in November. The index, based on the organization of career counselors’ survey of 122 employers and released Tuesday, covers employer expectations for January through March.

Worldwide software as a service (SaaS) revenue is forecast to reach $7.5 billion in 2009, a 17.7 percent increase from 2008 revenue of $6.4 billion, according to Gartner, Inc. The market will show consistent growth through 2013 when worldwide SaaS revenue will total over $14 billion for the enterprise application markets.

The national unemployment rate in July was 9.4%, down slightly from 9.5% in June.
