Jobless claims in surprise drop

The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits dropped unexpectedly by 10,000 last week to the lowest level in more than two months, government data Thursday showed in a report underscoring a healthy labor market.

Initial filings for state unemployment insurance aid for the week ended March 24 fell to a seasonally adjusted 308,000 from an upwardly revised 318,000 the prior week, the Labor Department said.

Unemployment rate dips to 4.5 percent

The unemployment rate dipped to 4.5 percent and workers got fatter paychecks in February, even as bad winter weather sent a bit of a chill through U.S. job growth.

The latest employment picture, released by the Labor Department on Friday, suggested employers are holding up well and opportunities continue for jobseekers as the economy deals with a sluggish spell, a housing slump and troubles in the automotive industry.
